MindWise at the Choice Project Launch: A Step Towards Addressing Health and Social Inequalities

Mon, 20 - January - 2025

As a key project partner, MindWise proudly attended the launch of the Choice Project at Ulster University last week. CHOICE, which stands for Challenging Health Outcomes / Integrating Care Environments, is a vital initiative designed to address health and social inequalities faced by individuals with severe mental illness in Northern Ireland. This project is a timely and critical response to the need for inclusive approaches that reduce health disparities and promote better well-being for marginalized groups.

The CHOICE community consortium was the only project in Northern Ireland to receive UKRI funding under the “Mobilising community assets to tackle health inequalities” strand. MindWise have been part of the project from the initial pilot, with our CEO Anne Doherty Chairing the Community Advisory Board. The Choice Project is underpinned by a clear rationale: it aims to build relationships with community assets while identifying access needs and exploring the lived experiences of participants. By understanding these challenges, the project seeks to create a more inclusive approach to mental health care and social support. The initiative also aims to assess the potential for wider social impact, driving lasting change in communities.

One of the key elements of the Choice Project is its focus on social prescribing. This approach seeks to link individuals with community-based support, rather than relying solely on clinical interventions. By implementing effective social prescribing practices, the project will empower individuals with severe mental illness to access a wider range of resources, improving their overall well-being and social connectedness.

At the launch, speakers emphasised the need for a recovery-based approach to mental health, collaborative support systems and equality. They also discussed the importance of finding common ground in addressing these issues. Supported education, employment, family intervention, and peer support were highlighted as essential components to reduce social exclusion and foster inclusion for those most in need.

Mind Wise is excited to collaborate with our partners and communities to help drive the Choice Project’s goals and ensure that all individuals, especially those living with severe mental illness, have access to the support and resources they need to thrive.
