In Northern Ireland, 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 8 children experience mental health issues. People living in the most deprived areas are more likely to have a probable mental illness, with 30% in the most deprived areas compared to 20% in the least deprived areas. This figure increases for young people, with 47.5% of those aged 11-19 years having experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE). The statistics are even more concerning for individuals experiencing homelessness, with almost 70% having a diagnosed mental health condition.
MindWise is dedicated to campaigning and advocating for change and increased funding for mental health services. We work tirelessly to ensure that people affected by mental health issues can live without stigma and discrimination and receive the support they deserve. Our mission is making mental health everyone's business. Our efforts include lobbying for better mental health policies, raising awareness about mental health issues, and providing essential services to those in need. We launched our ‘Wise Up: Fund Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services’ petition that calls for increased funding for children and young people’s mental health services across Northern Ireland, highlighting the disparity in allocated funding for children and young people’s mental health.

Hold a virtual fundraising event"After the birth of my baby I was feeling really low. I had put everyone else’s needs first and my own needs were pushed right to the bottom of the list. After speaking to my Health Visitor about how I was feeling she referred me to the Mum’s Wellness Project run by MindWise.
Being involved with the Mums Wellness Project has greatly helped build me back up to the person I used to be. It has helped me overcome my fears and emotions and helped me to step out in public again. It has also increased my confidence, my self-worth and self-esteem.
My hope for the future is that from what I have learned I can support, help, listen and encourage any young mother that is affected by similar situations".
- Sarah, a client from the Mum's Wellness Project
Michael’s experiences of mental ill health left him feeling hopeless. Then he was referred to MindWise in Magherafelt, where he was supported in regaining his confidence.
In 2012, my mental health started to deteriorate. I had deep depression at this stage and I was hospitalised. I spent three months in hospital. In 2014, my key worker through the community mental health team got me a place at MindWise. I was asked what my hobbies were, and what I was good at. Given my interest in joinery, I was told that MindWise had a fully functioning woodwork shop, so I decided to give it a try. Without MindWise and the people there, I do not believe that I would have gained back the life I have today.
