BSL Trained Befriending Volunteer - Carrickfergus

The main focus of this role is to provide befriending support to a deaf client in the Carrickfergus area. This role offers you, the volunteer the chance to build personal confidence as well as support a client with mental health needs and help reduce loneliness and isolation.

MAIN DUTIES

  • To support a service user to engage in community activities.
  • Facilitate services user in becoming independent.
  • To ensure health and safety is maintained at all times.
  • To support service user social interaction.
  • Participate in online training.
  • Report back to Supervisor on issues and updates.

ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Trained in BSL
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience in supporting a deaf person/people.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of health and safety.
  • Good understanding of personal and professional boundaries and adherence to confidentiality.
  • Interest in supporting those affected by severe mental illness.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of Befriending or Mentoring.
  • Previous experience within the Voluntary sector, or previous knowledge of those affected by severe mental illness.

Additional information

All appropriate and agreed expenses will be covered as per MindWise expenses policy. 

Enhanced Access NI checks will be carried out on all regulated positions and successfully returned prior to placement. To assist in the role volunteers will be expected to attend and fully engage in guidance and support meetings with an allocated volunteer supervisor and will have access to regular training.

Selection

Volunteer applicants must be over 18 and will be inducted via the Active 8 volunteer programme. They will be invited to an informal interview with the Volunteer Manager and the Service Manager.
